Iowa City Home Gets Lower Level & Master Bathroom Facelift
Here are two of our recent projects at the home of Kendall & Alice Atkinson in Iowa City.  They felt their lower level and master bathrooms both needed improvement and a general "facelift".  After taking measurements and assessing their needs, the plan began to take shape.

Lower Level Bath:
In the lower level bathroom, space was tight.  The entry door opened up against the shower making the room and the shower feel even more cramped.  The corner shower was difficult to access since the shower door could not be fully opened with the vanity right next to the shower.  Since making the area larger was not an option, this problem was solved by installing a new corner shower with sliding doors that open at the corner of the unit and slide toward the walls, providing a much easier entry to the shower.  Additionally, the swing of the bathroom entry door was reversed to rest against the opposite wall instead of the shower wall, which also helped with the space problem.

Other improvements to this bathroom included a new toilet, and an alder wood vanity, a countertop with an integrated bowl including updated faucets, a medicine cabinet and accessories, such as towel bars, etc.  The light fixture was replaced and an outlet added in the vanity area.  A new door was installed on an existing linen closet to replace the accordion style door that had been there for many years.

This bathroom is now much easier to use and has an updated look as well!

Master Bathroom:
The master bathroom was outdated, had an accordion style door at the entrance, and the shower was too small.  To address these issues, we removed the existing built-in linen cabinets to make room for a larger shower.  This meant some storage space had to be sacrificed.  In order to gain some of it back, a wall cabinet to match the new vanity was installed above the new toilet.

Paint in an inviting neutral color was chosen for the walls after the tile was removed.  The integrated bowl in the new countertop is now centered instead of offset to the side for a new look.  Light fixtures were also replaced, an exhaust fan installed, and an outlet added in the vanity area.  Light switches positioned next to the outlet provide an additional convenience.  New vinyl flooring compliments the updated look as do all the new accessories.

Finally, the accordion style door was removed and replaced with a pocket door which provides more privacy and makes for a much nicer entrance!
